Where exactly do you want these counts to go?
Can you show me an image/picture of what you WANT the expected output to look like?

It might be best to show two images:
- the first is JUST what you currently have done so far
- the second is what you want the final output to look like

I think that would go a long way in showing us exactly what still needs to be done, and exactly how you want it to look when done.

The current state is what I have at the moment. What I am trying to achieve is the reserve Vicky snow to be included in the count so I look across and I find duty 2 is completely covered.
when I look at duty 4, I see I have monday to cover and the same with duty 5. Saturday is uncovered. Does this help?

Excel Facts

What does custom number format of ;;; mean?
Three semi-colons will hide the value in the cell. Although most people use white font instead.
So, it looks like you do not care who covers it, just that it is covered.
If that is the case, for the Conditional Formatting, all you need to do is to check to see if the corresponding cell in the grid of the left is populated or not, i.e.
Excel Formula:
=D4=""

And to get your counts, you can just use the COUNTA function, which simply counts the number of non-blank cells.
See: COUNTA function - Microsoft Support.
