It has been a while since I originally posted my Fuzzy matching UDF’s on the board, and several variants have appeared subsequently.

I thought it time to ‘put the record straight’ & post a definitive version which contains slightly more efficient code, and better matching algorithms, so here it is.

Firstly, I must state that the Fuzzy matching algorithms are very CPU hungry, and should be used sparingly. If for instance you require to lookup a match for a string which starts with, contains or ends with a specified value, this can be performed far more efficiently using the MATCH function:

In my experience, algorithms 2 (explained above, and 4 (check out "Levenshtein" via Google) seem to be the most useful, but it all depends on your requirements of course.

By all means post back if anything is still too obscure.

Excel Facts

Links? Where??
If Excel says you have links but you can't find them, go to Formulas, Name Manager. Look for old links to dead workbooks & delete.
Ive been referred to this thread and followed the instructions but cant fathom a solution to this problem - this thread makes it look so easy so where am i going wrong?

I have 2 workbooks containing similar data from 2 different sources; the one common data item in both is a clients address but have the age old problem of data quality, which needs sorting eventually but i need a quick fix!

In workbook one for example the address will be recorded as RUSKIN RD

In workbook two the address will be recorded as RUSKIN ROAD

A simple look up wont work obviously as the 2 values dont match, then i thought of using the LEFT function but again this goes against the logic of the VLOOKUP.

Does anyone out there have any ideas/solutions??

Cheers

Simon

where are you getting problems have you added the Fuzzy Functions Code to VBA Module then you should be able to use them.
They can be found in Function under Categorie User Defined.

and why you are not starting your own thread and refer to this post in it?

Hello,

I think this is a really useful UDF.
I'm having some problems trying to adapt this to do something like:

=fuzzyvlookupif(lookupvalue,table_array,if_range,criteria)

I'm trying a fuzzy vlookup on an address, but I want to search for that address in a certain city, not all the cities in my database.
The address is in one column and the city is in another column.

Hi, it's more useful than you thought ;¬)

Try usuing the 'GROUP' functionality.

Here's the description of the parameters:
Code:
Function FuzzyVLookup(ByVal LookupValue As String, _
                      ByVal TableArray As Range, _
                      ByVal IndexNum As Integer, _
                      Optional NFPercent As Single = 0.05, _
                      Optional Rank As Integer = 1, _
                      Optional Algorithm As Integer = 3, _
                      Optional AdditionalCols As Integer = 0, _
                      Optional LookupColOffset As Integer = 0, _
                      Optional GroupColOffset As Integer = 0, _

Hy,

I managed to find the GroupColOffset & GroupValue and use them.
It seems that I have another problem now...

With
GroupColOffset & GroupValue I can do a fuzzyVlookupIF based on 1 criteria...how about 2 criterias?

Criteria 1: Region
Criteria 2: City

FuzzyVlookup Street in table_array where region = myRegion and city= myCity

Alan, you have formulated a great UDF. One query... Can your fuzzy vlookup work on 2 criteria. I learned how to use vlookup from this forum located here http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/excel-questions/666713-vlookup-three-criterias-2.html

Now i have 2 lists. List 1 have company names, contact names and emails. List 2 have company and contact names. Please refer to sample version of lists below.

Hi,

Here's my attempt at a solution (using code posted above). I've used the 'AdditionalCols' parameter, which, if set to 1 will cause the comparison on a concatenation of the values in columns 1&2 of the lookup table.
Note I've set NFPercent to 50%, and Algorithm = 4, but it's not quite there, you'll have to play with NFPercent value.
