I have a list of names such as:

1. Kay
2. Roy
3. Jay
4. Kay
5. Pete
6. Roy
7. Kay
8. Tom

These names might be repeating, such as Kay appearing 3 times above. How do I create a forumula to pull back the names in alphabetical order? But obviously omitting the repeating values? So if the forumula worked correctly I would have:

1. Jay
2. Kay
3. Pete
4. Roy
5. Tom

Hey Richard, did you create the formula or see it somewhere? Or put another way, do you know the history of a formula construction like that?

Excel Facts

This is a really neat formula and I have an application for it, but I need to tweak it, if possible. The idea is my 1st column is my securities portfolio (by ticker) with dups and unsorted and I want it sorted and without the dups PLUS I want to be able to not use some of the entries. For example, I just want the stock portfolio and not the mutual funds or bond entries. Is there any way to ignore the non-stock entries in column 1 so I can generate just the stock portfolio? I have a column to the left of the tickers with "Stock", "Fund", etc. for each associated ticker.

The beauty of Richard and Biff's formula is that it is so simple. But if there are blanks or further criteria, I could not adapt the formula because the COUNTIF Range argument does not accept arrays (or at least I think that that is the problem). Does anyone know an adaptation that might work?

It may be much easier to follow sandeep.warrier’s advice in post #2, and just use Filter or Advanced Filter and then Sort!!<o:p></o:p>

The filter technique doesn't really lend itself to what I'm looking for -- the portfolio changes often and I want it available to another speadsheet. I thought it might be a simple tweak to your 759 video, but it doesn't look like there's a simple fix to that. The easier way may be to use a bit of VBA.

I haven't tested this much, but this seems to take care of blank entries.

Edit: This does not seem to work properly when the list range contains a mixture of formula blanks and regular blanks. If all blanks are results of formulae, then, all unique sorted entries are returned, along with one blank entry right at the top.
