Hi guys,

I had this summary that i wanted to sum-up automatically, using the account # as the reference. Here's the examples.

Sheet 2

311 = (sum of all account # starting 311)
315 = (sum of all account # starting 315)
318 = (sum of all account # starting 318)

Notice that only the first 3 digits is the basis for the computation.

In your formula peter, it does work even my range is the whole column itself. But, in the last portion of your formula, i didnt get the logic of having -sum(...). Thats why i opted to used the one yahya provided formula.

You are of course welcome to use whatever formula you are comfortable with. In general terms SUMIF is more efficient than SUMPRODUCT but if you don't have too many of these formulas or too large a dataset, you probably won't notice the difference.

But, in the last portion of your formula, i didnt get the logic of having -sum(...).

To explain the logic, consider the data in post #3 and the formula in E4 resulting from copying the formula suggested down. The E4 formula is:

=SUMIF(A$2:A$20,"<="&(D4*1000+999),B$2:B$20)-SUM(E$1:E3)

The blue part sums everything in the column B range where the column A range is less than 318999. That sum would include all the rows that start with 311 and 315 since they are also less than 318999. However, all the rows that start with 311 and 315 have been summed in cells E2:E3. So if we subtract those sums (the red part of the formula above) from the overall total, we get the sum for rows where column A is less than 318999 and greater than 315999, which is what is required.
