I would like to keep a work sheet that has the dates in A column. one item in B column and another item in column C.

Then in column D I want a running total of column B and in column E want a running total of column C

Somehow I would like to have a starting count for each columns B&C and then the rest of the worksheet will keep a running count as described above.

If I have not be clear as to what I want, I have 2 items and want to keep a daily running count of each item.

Thanks in advance to everyone who replies to my post

Why are you typing numbers in row 2?
I thought that is where you wanted you running sum?
I thought you would only be entering number in rows 4 and later, and row 2 should show the total of those rows?
If you are typing hard-coded numbers in row 2, you are overwriting the formulas you just entered in there.

Excel Facts

Can you sort left to right?
To sort left-to-right, use the Sort dialog box. Click Options. Choose "Sort left to right"

OK, it is clear that I am taking up a lot of your time. I appreciate all your help,

How about you give me the formulas from the start. I need the top number in my example in RED in B2 and C2 to show a beginning amount. Then I need the red number to update according to what I enter B4 or C4 .

The example shows only 22 rows but I want it to go all the way down on both totals so I can use it for years to come.

If you tell me exactly what to put in my cell for the start number I will put your number in then I need the rest of the rows to update the cells B2 and C2

Any cell in Excel can only hold either:
- one number
- one formula

Without the use of VBA (which I don't think you want to get into that, that is an advanced topic), Excel cannot remember what was in a cell before making a change to it to include it in your calculation.

As such, the best/easiest thing for you is to put your starting value in a different cell from the cell that you want to show the running total in.
So, I think the easiest way to do that is to show your starting values on row 4, and then have your daily value rows under that.
Then you would use those SUM formulas in row 2 as I showed you in post #26.

In a nutshell, do NOT try to use the same cell for both your starting values and running totals!

What still isn't working?

If you post a sample file up to a file sharing site like box.net and provide a link, I can take a look at your file.

Thanks for trying your best to help me but I finally figured something that will work for me. I selected two cells and then used =sum(B:B) and =sum(C:C) in those two cells and as I add and subtract the totals in the 2 cells I put the formula in updates.

Thanks again to all who tried to help, I guess I got so frustrated I got determined to figure it out myself. As you people were trying to imagine what I needed and I couldn't explain it well enough.

Thanks again !!
