Why place a + in the formula?

When working on someone else's workbook recently, I noticed some of the formulas begin with a + (plus). I've never seen anyone do this before, but it looks like they are just making the sign explicitly known.

Why would one do that?

It's a legacy of Lotus 123. Not needed with XL.
