Using Or function in Sumifs

I would like to sum data in a database based on responses to to several check boxes that relate to two fields in the database. A user can select any or all of 7 options for each field, the options having to do with types of technology the user wishes to view and various size ranges. How can I do this? I tried to use the sumifs function, using the Or function to define the criteria, but I can't get that to work.

Excel Facts

Create a Pivot Table on a Map
If your data has zip codes, postal codes, or city names, select the data and use Insert, 3D Map. (Found to right of chart icons).
Is it possible to add a field that tests the OR condition? If you can, then you can run the sumif function using the new field for the criteria.

I apologize in advance that my suggestion is not elegant.

That's a thought. I do like elegant, but at this point I will settle for something that works. Thanks for the suggestion.
