using a cell that already has a formula in it

Hi all, I have a cell that already has a formula in it, for example my cell E2 has a formula in it which reads =one!O2

In this case I am trying to apply a "OR" formula to this cell, but it doesnt seem to like having that formula already in it. I want to use the value of E2 of course.

Any suggestions,,..?

Regards, Paul

Excel Facts

Select all contiguous cells
Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
..just as a matter of co incidence, I'm just near nambucca heads, pouring here now

In that case a very special welcome to MrExcel for you! :)

"Just near" Which way?
I'm actually just out of Macksville, 2 km to the west.

As it turns out you are the second Nambucca Valley resident that I have encountered on this forum. I think 3 of us (at least) from this fairly small community is quite impressive.

Gentlemen, I might have half figured this out. Seems that my original source from the net where I copied and pasted data had that extra character there, and the "TRIM" function could be fixing up things,

thanks again,

Paul

Hi again Biff,

You'll regret asking me this question, but what I am working on is part of a horse racing system. One of my passions, horse racing. Part of my spreadsheet looks like this, not sure if this will work or not:

Not sure if you can follow any of this Biff, but the Form column indicates the horses last 3 runs, with a x meaning a spell. DLR is days since it last races. Then you have last start beaten margin and previous start beaten margin. Then combined lengths over those two starts that it was beaten by. If the horse is first up the next column is what it was beaten by at its last first up start (last prep). Then you have if it is second up, and the margin it was beaten by at its first up run. (clear as mud,....??, I hope you can follow).

Now,..to my OR conditions. Basically what I am trying to do is highlight the horses that meet one of the following criteria = finished within 2 lengths of the winner at either one of its past two starts, or being beaten by a combined margin not exceeding 6 lengths. If resuming must have finished within 2 lenghths of the winner at its last prep first up run. If second up must have finished within 4 lengths of the winner when first up.

I bet your sorry you asked now, just joking. So I am trying to fathom my way through a formula that will highlight all this. My first hiccup being that the data in cell E2 (Btn Mgn) is a result from worksheet one!O2. This situation will most likely re occur.

Regards, Paul

Sorry, but I'm lost!

Betting on NFL football is much easier! :)

Hi Peter,

I'm at Valla Beach. Been here for about 12 years now. That query that I put up yesterday, I thought I had it fathomed out, but even a TRIM or a CLEAN wouldnt really work. However, and I have no idea how I did it, come up with a long crazy formula that actually worked. My problem has obviously occured from the original copying and pasting from data from a webpage. Wherein other formulas such as OR etc, just dont seem to like the format of it and they keep giving me a FALSE, when I know it should be a TRUE. I've pretty much battled my way through it all.

When I see/read statements like that they automatically cause a red flag!

Copying and pasting from web pages is notorious for causing data problems.

When you copy/paste from web pages you almost certainly get unseen whitespace characters that get included with your data. Most common of these whitespace characters is the html char 160 non-breaking space character. Neither TRIM nor CLEAN will remove them.

The macro at this website will remove all leading/trailing and multiple interspersed char 32 space characters. It will also remove and/or convert char 160 non breaking spaces into standard char 32 space characters. It will work on text or numbers and the numbers will be converted to true numeric numbers.

I use this macro dozens of times every single day! It is a real time saver.

If you don't want to go down the macro route, this manual process should work.

After pasting the data into your sheet ..

1. Select a cell that has one of these 'rogue characters' (rc) in it.
2. In the formula bar, carefully select a single rc and Copy
3. Escape out of editing that cell.
4. Select all the data (or whole columns) that was pasted.
5. Invoke Edit/Replace.. (Edit menu or Home ribbon|Find & Select depending on your Excel version)
6. Find what: Paste (Ctrl+v) the rc here | Replace with: leave blank | Options>> | ensure 'Match entire cell contents' is NOT checked | Replace All | Ok | Close

Hi and thanks Peter, I didnt get to look at your reply until tonight. I pretty much followed what you said but ended up getting a "you have typed an error, get help etc etc".

I'm sort of plodding along ok at present, my next step would be to see if macros helps in what I am doing here, so hence I need to learn a bit on those.

Thanks again,

Paul
