Hi
I want to be able to count unique rows of data.
I have three columns (A) has a date (B) has the name of a person and (C) has an audit type.

I know I need an array but not sure how to structure it for 3 columns
<TABLE style="WIDTH: 184pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=245 border=0 x:str><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 53pt; mso-width-source: userset; mso-width-alt: 2596" width=71><COL style="WIDTH: 19pt; The answer for these 3 columns is 5. Rows 4 and 5 are the same so are only counted once.
I can get the arrray to count unique items in the whole range and in a column but not for each row.
I have a feeling this is going to obvious but I can't work it out.
Thanks for helping

Can you provide a small sample of the data, along with the actual expected result?

Hi Domenic,

It should display something like the above.

Sorry I got the match numbers wrong then -

For Alison, Sarah and Shanon it should be a '1'

For Alison a '1'
Angela - 2
Emma - 3
Michelle - 4
Sarah - 1
Tracey - 4
Jane - 5
Sharon - 1
Julie - 4

Hi,

Especially for working with large amounts of data, a different approach might be good.

Using database functionality and SQL like below. I've assumed a header in row 1 with data under on worksheet Sheet1.

Code:
SELECT Count(*) AS [MyCount]
FROM (SELECT DISTINCT * FROM [Sheet1$])

I'll describe a query table approach as this works without VBA and without worksheet formulas. Assumes the file has been saved at some time. Is refreshable like a pivot table and by using the [Sheet1$] syntax will adjust automatically for changes to the number of source rows (of course, must be refreshed).

BTW, superior usually is to not use a query table but instead use VBA and ADO.

Instead of the sheet reference, a named range could be used so long as it is not a dynamic named range.

To implement, having saved the file, go via menu data, import external data, new database query. Excel files, OK. Browse for your Excel file - can be the same file as the source data. OK. If you get a message about no visible tables OK to that and then go 'options' and 'system tables'. This will let you see the worksheet names. If you have a defined name you won't need that step - or if you have previously set 'system tables'. Then select some or all fields from the data and continue until you get the chance to go into MS Query. Within MS Query hit the SQL button and replace what you see with the above. Hit the SQL button again to see the result then the 'open door' icon to return the results to Excel. Refresh as required via the data menu or external data toolbar or right click.

This does require some consistency in the data as it does not handle so called 'mixed data types' of text and numeric entries in one field. With the manual approach as described there is hard coded file path so that if you move the file it won't work. This can be worked around via VBA.

This should be fast even with tens of thousands of records and many fields.

HTH, Fazza

Thanks for the reply Fazza

But is there anyway to do it in Excel or VBA? Without having any cross application integration?

Hi, Oakwood. It is fully in Excel. I detailed the non-VBA way but if using VBA it can be different/better. Regards, Fazza
