As an interesting historical aside, you can look for the many places where the prime meridian has been located in the past (Paris, Jerusalem, Rome, Copenhagen, Pisa, St. Petersburg, Philadelphia). Ptolemy apparently ran it through the Canaries, at the very first. It's a completely arbitrary determination.
