SUMIF function

i have a question ... i have an assignment to do and this is what it asked me to do.
Create a Summary worksheet containing:
Total Costs and Total Profits for A course
Total Costs and Total Profits for B course.
use the SUMIF function to calculate these costs

how do i use SUMIF?? i mean i can probably just use SUM function to calculate it ... but the course guide ask me to use SUMIF ... anyone ?

Is your data seperated into A course and B Course? If not have does your spreadsheet look.

Ok, got your workbook. What are you trying to SUMIF? Are you trying to get a sum for the profitable courses and/or the Non-profitable?

sorry but i dont speak dutch ... erm im just trying to find ... Total costs and total profits for traditional courses

and also total costs and total profits for online courses
both using the SUMIF function. In my spreadsheet i used SUM function cuz im not sure on how to use the sumif

Okay here goes:

=SUMIF(C3:C16,"Traditional",D3:D16) gives the cost for traditional courses

=SUMIF(C3:C16,"OnLine",D3:D16) gives the cost for online courses

SUMIF(C3:C16,"Traditional",E3:E16) gives the profit for traditional courses

=SUMIF(C3:C16,"OnLine",E3:E16) gives the profit for online courses

Looking at the example immediately above it says "Look in the range C3 to C16 for OnLine. For every entry in range C3 to C16
that equals Online, sum up the amount for that entry in the range E3 to E16.
