Standalone PivotChart - collapse fields

In a standard PivotChart that is based on an existing PivotTable, it's possible to collapse a field in the Columns (Series) and this will be reflected in the chart. For example, if I my data organized by years, quarters, and months, and I want to show 2016 by month and then collapse 2017 forward, I can do this.

However, if I create a PivotChart from my data model and do not have any PivotTable, I can't figure out how to collapse fields in the Series.

Is this possible to do or do I have to create the PivotTable first and then the chart? Trying to eliminate excess wherever possible, so preferable to have just the chart.

Thanks
