Hi peeps. I really need some help here and know this is the place to ask.

What I need is as follows:

I have a grid of car registration numbers. I need the ability to have a search box and enter a car registration number. If a match is found I need it to give me the location of that reg number.

Example:

Search 'WJ05ASP' would return 'A4' as WJ05ASP is located in the column A Row 4.

I have searched here but can't seem to find anyone asking this.

Thanks anyone that can help me here. And if you require a excel attach example to play with then I will provide one.

If every cell in the matrix had an entry I could probably figure out a way to exclude hidden columns if you're using Excel 2003 or later.

However, I see that in your screencap not every cell has an entry.

If every cell is not filled then I don't think this can be done using a formula.

You would have to get someone to write you a custom function (VBA UDF).

Hiya mate, thanks for your answer. Yes unfortunately not every cell will have a value. But I could put junk entries into the blank cells not used if that would help any.

Well, unfortunately I couldn't come up with anything that works.

You can account for hidden rows in a formula but you can't account for hidden columns in a formula! I guess the folks at MS must have thought no one would ever need/want to do that! :rolleyes:

Unless someone else can do it with a formula (which I'd like to see!), I think you're going to need the UDF.

Cheers mate I really appreciate your input this far. You have helped me out a massive amount. I think I am asking way too much from excel alone. But I'll do my best to get there.

LOL. By the way is there a possibility to have any txt entered in a cell automaticaly be black? I have conditional formating to highlight each search and don't know if I can have more than 1 conditional formating.

Yeah, I'll take a look at it. Maybe seeing the actual file will give me a better idea of what you're wanting to do which might lead to an idea that could work.
