Scraping data from WIFI networks that are available

Ultimately, I would like to combine the results from the following onto one sheet:

1) CreateObject("WScript.Shell").Run "cmd /c netsh wlan show networks mode=BSSID" & _
"|clip""", 0, True
specifically:
SSID, Networktype, Authentication, Encryption, MAC Address (BSSID), Signal level, Radiotype, Band, & Channel ... I have the code to do this :)

2) Data scraped from WLAN_AVAILABLE_NETWORK
specifically:
uNumberOfBssids, uNumberOfPhyTypes, dot11PhyTypes

3) Data scraped from WLAN_BSS_ENTRY
specifically:
lRssi, uLinkQuality, usBeaconPeriod, ullTimestamp


The code I have for getting the data from WLAN_AVAILABLE_NETWORK works perfectly.

The problems I encounter is when I try getting the data from WLAN_BSS_ENTRY.

The problems seem to be multiple.
The gathering of data from WLAN_BSS_ENTRY only occasionally works for the first row of data, most of the time it produces 'garbage' info. All additional rows seem to result in 'garbage' info.

I would tend to think that the issue is a memory pointer issue not being incremented properly.

I have also noticed that the WLAN_AVAILABLE_NETWORK section that works perfectly, doesn't 'jive' with the results from WLAN_BSS_ENTRY ... ie. The SSID's aren't matched up.


Any help would be most appreciated. Probably serves me right for delving into this area of API's and such that I am not used to dealing with.

Perhaps someone such as @Jaafar Tribak or others that are wise to this approach of 'scraping' data could assist.

Hi johnnyL

Sorry for not getting back sooner... I see you have added the progress feedback in the excel application statusbar while the code is processing the networks related data. This is better than nothing but IMHO, using the excel statusbar is too small and hardly noticeable\visible by the user which kind of defeats its purpose.

In order to make the progress of the data processing more visible to the user, I think it is more adequate to display the progress in the center of the screen.

To achieve this, I have added to the vbaproject a formatted userform (WaitForm) which contains a nice looking wait progress animated GIF as shown in the small clip below:






FYI, I have extracted the actual gif file bytes and stored them in a hidden sheet named *Gif_Bytes* in Column A ... So, this hidden worksheet has to be ported along with the code.

Also, please note that this animated Wait GIF is optional. If you set the module level Boolean variable to False ( bShowWaitGIF = False) in the GetInfoAboutWifiNetworksNearMe SUB, then the animated Wait GIF won't show up... So if you think showing the Wait GIF is overkill, you can skip it. It is up to you.

Excel Facts

Can you sort left to right?
To sort left-to-right, use the Sort dialog box. Click Options. Choose "Sort left to right"

Btw, How are you getting such strong RSSI values? Are you right next to the wireless router?
RSSI -12 and Signal 100%
RSSI -18 and Signal 100%
Yes. like you said, those two first entries indicating very strong recieved wifi signal correspond to the SSID (router) which is next to the external wifi adapter that I am using on my pc.

In fact, the pc, the router and the wifi adapter are all located right next to each other.

The other less strong RSSI down the column are weaker and are picked from other routers in the neighborhood.

BTW, did the animated Wait Gif work for you with no issues ? ie: as shown in the clip ?
Also, out of interest, you are not using the code in excel 2007. Right ? ( I see office 2007 in your forum profile ... maybe your forum signature needs updating)

Honestly @Jaafar Tribak, I haven't tried the animation that you suggested due to the foreseen difficulty perceived in distributing it. With this project, I would prefer just being able to post code that others can paste & go with. I think it would be too difficult to explain it. Your clip does look pretty cool though!!!

I prefer to use Excel 2007, but I found that I had to use some slightly different code to get it to work in Excel 2007 as opposed to Excel 2013 & above due to the 'LongPtr' references in the code.

Are you aware how of how to make it work in all versions Excel 2007 and Newer?

Yes. The last code I posted (post #91) should be compatible with all versions of excel and Windows (including bitness) because I used all the necessary conditionnal compilations.

After making the changes and trying it in excel 2007 32bit I get a compile error:

Private Enum and user-defined types cannot be used as parameters or return types for public procedures, public data members, or fields of public user-defined types​


Still works in Excel 2013 32bit though

I did manage fix the compile error by changing:

To:

The compile error occurred at the line:
VBA Code:
    Private Enum LongPtr

I solved the compile error by changing that line to:
VBA Code:
    Public Enum LongPtr

Again, sorry for not being clear enough in my previous post. After I made that one change, Excel 2007 & above versions that I have all tested fine. :)
