OK, I'll see if I can find out what happened with that previous investigation into this idea.

My sentiments are also as per Rory's and everybody who +1'd.

Also, hopefully the searching user can see by the post date if the question/answer is really not applicable to 2010 and should be aware that things do get outdated and/or improved upon and that there could be more up-to-date solutions, etc.

I wasn't able find out exactly why the previous investigation faltered but I did bring that old thread and this one to the attention of the administrators. However, they seem to have plenty on their plate and don't see this as a high priority item, so I'm not sure that you will see any action on this - at least in the short-term.

Thanks for the feedback and follow up. I can't wait to see some of the changes in store and I can understand other things coming first, such as, trying to kill the spamming.
