Remove a workbook password

I am using Excel 2003.

I have a workbook with password protection for opening. When I open it, Tool>Option>Security shows the password as asterisks. I remove them. I then SaveAs and under Tools, General Options, Remove the Asterisks for Password to Open. I then continue with the save.

Then I check that the password has been removed, but it has come back.

I have put an Exit Sub as the first line of my Before_Save code so I know that the code is not doing anything.

Does anyone know what stops me from removing the password to open the file.

Once you get the password issue straightened out, if you are on a network it might be easier for you to "Allow Users to Edit Ranges". This will give them access to the specific areas that you want without compromising the entire workbook .

Waterfall charts in Excel?
Office 365 customers have access to Waterfall charts since late 2016. They were added to Excel 2019.
Hi ZVI,

The problem seems to be deeper than I thought. I create a new workbook in Excel 2003. No other workbooks are open, not even Personal.xls. There are no addins ticked other than the ususal Excel standard addins. There are no other addins available to be ticked.

I protect the workbook (not worksheet) with "tom" and save the workbook as an xlsm. I then close the workbook. I open the workbook from the latest of the recently used list and it asks for a password. The password which opens it is the original long password that I was using for the original workbook.

This appears seemingly out of nowhere as there is nothing running which could connect it to the original workbook. The problem does not occur when saved as an xls. nor when saved as an xlsm with out workbook protection. At no stage do I enter a password to open the workbook.

I am utterly baffled.

Thanks Tim,

I don't have any other protection problems, just this one curious issue.

Yea, it’s abnormal behavior.
Not sure, but this can be the issue of XLSM converter if Excel 2003 is used.
What about workbook level of protection via menu Tools - Protection – Protect Workbook instead of the file level of protection?
