I am trying to write a formula by referencing a cell in another sheet. The result: my formula written out in full text and not the result of the formula. The cell which I refer to is a download from an add in application called easysoft.

Can you please help ?

Andrew,

The easysoft download is in the range a1:e2000. When I copied the formula "away" from the easysoft download I copied it outside this range.

Here is an example of the data as well as the formula :

Data from column A:

FULL_NAME
FIXED LINE LOCAL CALLS
FIXED LINE CALLS TO JERSEY GEOGRAPHICAL

Formula:
=VLOOKUP(E2,Extract!A:C,3,FALSE)

Excel Facts

When did Power Query debut in Excel?
Although it was an add-in in Excel 2010 & Excel 2013, Power Query became a part of Excel in 2016, in Data, Get & Transform Data.
Sorry to keep asking questions, but I need to understand the problem.

If the easysoft data is on sheet Extract columns A to E why are you looking up A:C?

What is in cell E2 on the other sheet and what result do you expect from your formula?

Andrew,

The formula is definitely right.

It has to do with the format of the cells that are in text. The result that I get is like when you have a formula and you format the column where the formula is to text via the menu path: Data, Text to columns.

So to summarise:

I have a formula (vlookup in this case) in sheet A that points to a cell from an easysoft download in sheet B.

The result of the formula in sheet A, is my formula written out in text and not the value required.

How can I change this "thing" not to return text but to return a value ?

I'm stumped.

If I format a cell containing a formula as text the result of the formula is still the same - only the appearance changes eg a value is left justified.

The only way I can get the actual formula to appear in the cell is to type ' (or some other character) before the =. Or choose display formulas from Tools, Options View.
