Practicing VBA

Hi everyone,

I am new to VBA. I have been going through some examples from textbooks and through reading this forum. I was just wondering if anyone knows any good resources (website or books) that have practical questions where there is a real life problem and then we have to solve the issue?

I have registered for some internet websites where there are such real life problems but they usually involve working for someone. I do not believe that I have the technical knowledge to be paid to do the stuff, plus I do not want to ruin my reputation on these websites.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Marco

Hi Marco,

That's exactly what sites like this are for.

You could always try tackling some of the problems posed, without posting a solution, and seeing how your 'solution' compares with those offered. Naturally, there are often numerous ways of tackling the same problem and the 'accepted' solution might differ from your's. What's important, though, is whether your solution achieves the same end (and preferably in an efficient manner). Then, when you're confident with the solutions you're getting, start posting them. Sometimes you'll find that your solution won't work because the OP's definition of the problem omitted some important piece of information, or because you misunderstood the question but, hey, that's life. On the positive side, when you post a solution of your own and someone suggests what they think is a better (or just different) way of tackling the problem, you'll be able to learn from interacting with them.

I basically used macropod's suggestion. When starting out and I wanted problems to work on I came here. I would find a problem, ignore any solution(s) already offered and try to develop my own. Then I would look at the solutions already offered in the forum and look to see how/if they were better than mine. They mostly were better so I tried to learn from each of those posts.

Eventually I decided to try posting some solutions of my own and still there was generally a better solution subsequently offered by somebody else. Again I tried to learn from that to improve my own coding.

That process is still continuing. :)

If you think about the fact that almost any repetitive task can be automated, then I'd look at things you do normally with Excel/Word, etc. and play with the macro recorder to start seeing how everyday processes translate into code. It's much easier to understand & translate the code if you're familiar with the manual process.
