Hi, I have Windows 7 and office 2007. Out of the blue, when trying to save a macro on personal workwook, Excel gives me the following message: personal workbook must stay open for recording a Marco on personal workbook. I've read previous thread, and tried the proposed solution
Click the Excel Options button.
In the categories pane, click Add-ins.
Disabled Items, and then click Go.
Select the disabled add-in and click Enable..

I enabled the Personal workbook but still the problem remain.
My personal workbook is in the right path:
C:\Users\ALBERTO\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART
And is called PERSONAL.XLSB
Does this file have to have a some specific settings? Shall I try to delete it and re-crerate it?I've tried everything but I’m stumped. Thanks
Alberto

Excel Facts

How to create a cell-sized chart?
Tiny charts, called Sparklines, were added to Excel 2010. Look for Sparklines on the Insert tab.
Try moving it out of the XLSTART folder. If it's not in that folder it wont load unless you manually do so. Then try recording a macro and see if it works.

If you would like to use the macros that are on the existing personal.xlsb file. Rename the file, load it up, and copy the modules across to the new personal.xlsb file.

Good luck.

Thanks for your answer. I moved the Personal out of the XLSTART folder. Tried to record a macro on Personal and still gave me the same error "personal workbook must stay open for recording a Macro"

Tried to create a new personal.xlsb on the XLSTART
If I go on personal.xlsb file properties and tick “hidden” and try to record a macro --- always same error
If I go on personal.xlsb file properties and untick “hidden”, when I open a new workbook, the new book is called “Personal.xlsb but of course it does that’s not what I want
I don't have VBA code on this Personal.xlsb cause it's my personal computer, but I wish I could create some new macros

Thanks Alansidman I read all the tutorial but there is nothing that could solve my problem.
It seems that my excel doesn’t consider hidden files, doesn’t recognize them
If I hide the Personal.xlsb, then open it manually and try to record a macro on the personal workbook, the system says
personal workbook must stay open for recording a Macro
If I unhide the Personal.xlsb, then open it manually and try to record a macro on the personal workbook, it works
Thanks
Alberto

This bit seems a bit different to how I remember setting up my PERSONAL workbook.
Try this...

1) unhide the personal workbook in the properties.
2) in the XLSTART folder there should be 2 files, the personal.xlsb file and another workbook i.e. whatever you call it Book1.xlsx etc.
3) open Excel. Both files should now be open.
4) in the personal file click the view tab and then in the Windows part click hide.
5) close and reopen Excel.

Thanks for your answer Mark858
5) close and reopen Excel
Once I reopen excel, the personal workbook won’t open automatically.
Finally
if personal.xlsb ---properties ---tick hide
Personal.xlsb won’t open automatically
If personal.xlsb---properties---tick unhide
Personal.xlsb will open automatically
It’s as if my excel doesn’t open hidden files automatically anymore
