Can anyone advise on how to prevent this from happening ?

Excel Facts

Add Bullets to Range
Select range. Press Ctrl+1. On Number tab, choose Custom. Type Alt+7 then space then @ sign (using 7 on numeric keypad)
During the autosave, especially for large Workbooks, the application will respond poorly or not at all during the save. The disk write speed (also affected by memory and CPU) is the primary cause here.

Check the frequency of AutoSave through the application Option.

Thanks for the info. I have previously done a repair as well as disabled add-ins but problem not resolved

Will definitely try your method. sometimes I have between 8 and 15 workbooks open and the autorecover is set for every 10 mins. Have now set this to 60 mins.

Will monitor situation for a few days and let you know
