Using HTML to format e-mail messages could be a bit trickier. It can depend on how your e-mail program is set up and any other number of things.

I've never bothered with HTML email stuff myself, but I would think a good place to start is to check your e-mail program settings to make sure you can receive such emails and/or display them correctly.

I did exactly how you said I should try it in this forum. It worked (as you saw) here, but not on my email (which is hotmail)

It will work on this board and anywhere else that utilizes BB code. The font, quote, code buttons all utilize BB code. My animated SmileDog banner below utilizes BB code (thanks to help from Pooks). On the other hand, Colo's utility, which also works on this board, uses HTML code as opposed to BB code.
