Here is one approach --

Number grades here -- as many students as needed, 1 per row:
Book1
ABCDEFGHIJKLM
1StudentMathHistoryScienceArtsChemistryMusicPhyEdFrenchSociologyCmptrSciSpellingPenmanship
2Bloggs,Joe1.31.52.32.54.03.45.27.57.06.56.05.5
3Jon,Just8.07.06.05.04.03.02.04.72.51.33.37.3
Sheet1

Converted to letter grades here:
Book1
ABCDEFGHIJKLM
1StudentMathHistoryScienceArtsChemistryMusicPhyEdFrenchSociologyCmptrSciSpellingPenmanship
2Bloggs,JoeGGF/GF/GFFF/SES/ES/ESS
3Jon,JustES/ESF/SFF/GGF/SF/GGFE
Sheet2

Based upon this lookup table:
Book1
ABCD
1ScoreLtrGrade
21.30G
32.30F/G
43.30F
54.30F/S
65.30S
76.30S/E
87.30E
98.30E+

It has been my experience that, for understanding, it usually takes three or more communications, plus an actual file to relate to, in order to arrive at a final solution to almost any problem.

You have now received at least three good solutions for your stated problem. I feel that, if you still don't think you have a viable solution, you should proceed either to post a complete example of your spreadsheet, or, otherwise, contact the person you think has what appears to be the best solution for you, and send that person a copy of your spreadsheet.

I post the above, with the good intention of helping all concerned.
