Lookup, value could be in more than one column

I have the results of a load of basketball games and want to find out what a team's last result was. (I got columns C and D with simple if functions on the results and these columns may be redundant.)

So in E2 I would like to have a lookup function which searches columns A and B for the first occurrence of "Golden State Warriors" and then returns if they won or not. i.e. in this case it will come out as "no"

Many thanks for the help and sorry this is badly explained.

It's a bit of a monster and I'm sure there's a "cleaner" way, but it seems to work.

I've used IFERROR to capture where the team doesn't exist in either column below the lookup row, which assumes you have Excel 2007 or beyond.

I pasted that formula into E3 like you said. It warned me about circular references (I clicked OK), but every time it just comes out as 0 in column E

The data is in columns A and B with headers in row 1.
I don't know what you mean by

and I copied the formula down after pasting it in.

I tried pasting that into several different cells and also having another column for names like taurean's formula, but it just comes out with #VALUE!

My apologies. The formula shall be pasted in F3 (and not in E3) while in E3, the team name that you want to check the result of.

Also, Matty has suggested a good point of error handling (If entry doesn't exist in both columns). But that can be handled if you let us know if the formula works or not!

I like your solution to this.

I've run your formula through the evaluator and I can see what's happening, but I'm not familiar with how INDIRECT interprets the notation R0016C0004 correctly.

Is there a reason you "padded" things with these 0s?

(So, to be honest. it is not my creation. Merit to BH)

INDIRECT(stringAddress,0) allows you to use RC references that in some cases is very useful.

The 0 (zeros) are used to build properly the string to be interpreted (an argument) by INDIRECT(string,0)

Mr Houdini is, indeed, enviably good at writing formulas. Kudos to him.

Looking at this again, I think we could rewrite the formula as follows:

=IFERROR(INDIRECT(TEXT(SMALL(IF($A$2:$B$100=F2,100*ROW($A$2:$B$100)+COLUMN($A$2:$B$100)+2),2),"\R00\C00"),0),"")

Which would remove the unnecessary 0s.

What do you think?

It was my first attempt with INDIRECT(string,0) in a big formula, so i was afraid that with more rows, say 1,000 or 10,000, it was necessary to use more 0 (zeros).

That was the reason for the using of 0000 instead of 00. I saw no reason to spare 0 (zeros), but you are right in the sense that the formula with less zeros is clearer and easier to understand.
