Can you please tell me the formula to total different items individually from a column of mixed entries.

i.e. Cell V4 equals the sum of all entries of CARS in column W where there are entries of Cars, buses and taxis listed

Many thanks for your time and assistance.

Excel Facts

Links? Where??
If Excel says you have links but you can't find them, go to Formulas, Name Manager. Look for old links to dead workbooks & delete.

In Cell V4 place =COUNTIF(W:W,"CARS")

If I inderstand your request correctly, you can use the COUNTIF function. Assuming you have a mixed collection of cars, taxis and buses, in cells W1 through W100, then the formula =COUNTIF(w1:W100,"cars") in V1 will display the number of cells with the word "cars" in W1:W100.
