Issue with recognising Values

Hi

I have some details which are imported from an SQL database where the numeric value is treated as text. I have added a column into the powerpivot table with =value(textCol) to convert it to a number, I have also tried multiplying by 1 to do this. In both cases when I try to create a pivot table on the new value it does not allow me to put the details into the value area of the pivot table.

I've tried looking on the site but can't find anything similar.
