How can I use the value in one cell inside the formula in another cell?

Here's my example:

In cell A1 I have the formula =sum($b$1:$b$8)

I want to replace ONLY THE 8 above with a cell reference...for example in cell D1 I have the number 9. How can I get that number 9 inside my formula by just referencing D1?

How do I make a greater than or equal to the cell I am referencing?

=SUMIFS(D2:D11,B2:B11,"<800",C2:C11,">=800")
But instead of putting 800 I want to reference a specific cell. I keep reading that I have to use INDIRECT but I am not sure exactly what it has too look like.
Can some one please help!

Instead of ">=800" try ">="&A1

Where A1 contains the value you are interested in
