Hall of Fame Winner

Well, step 11, while great sales advice, it isn't what got this post nominated. What isn't really mentioned, which should be, in the thread or write-up, is that if you have something that rips in xl 2000 and it reacts like molasses in XP, it could very well be that your default print driver is incompatible with XL XP. Try flipping the driver for expected results.

There isn't much to argue, it's not widely known, it's a broad-based concern and has been demonstrated itself to be true historically. It's a great heads up.

Hi

I don't see the problem, i knew this was a winner some 10 weeks ago, OK might only be 8 but even so, was a bit slow getting there.

Question i have been heavily accused of not answering solutions, and doing what been dubbed cheerleading - an expression i do not understand, i might say encourage, and motivate. But this HOF is not a solution, of have i got this wrong, and it offers no fix, there can be 101 other reasons to why Excel is being naughty ???

Maybe its me - <shrug>

Also from a techi point of view and i know most do listen to me here, it 'ant gonna work on many versions of Excel - ??

Jack .
I have tried to contact Mark and PM and all the rest to ask a few questions of help, he chooses to ignore me? Also when i email in my real name via a secure delivery server the tracking says delivered - i get no reply ???

Like i say - I'm sure its just me!!

Yes, I can agree that some solutions is not widely spread in the XL-world .

The reason is simple, people in common don´t handle this type of question since they usually belong to the IT-departments AND they are not exclusive related to XL, i e the effect appears with XL but the cause is related to hardware / software interface & configuration.

From a system-engineering / hardware support it´s basic.

To keep a computer in good condition the rules are:
- Regular upgrade the BIOS.
- Regular upgrades all kind of drivers.
- Regular upgrade to latest Service-
Package /Patches for softwares.
- Regular update the AV-software.
- Regular delete/empty temp-folders.
- Never install games on a working computer,
especially sharewares.
- And I think that Jack et al can add some
more lines to this list.

Bill, Nate and several other members of the board see it as "news" because the lack of knowledge in combination with the fact that it works.

While for me and other it is no "news" at all because these is what we do on a regular basis to keep our computers in good condition and therefore minimize the problems that may occur.

The above explain why we have different opinions about what is "news", at least it does for me

A similar situation appear on another board for some year ago. Among the VB (Visual Basic) / VB.Net-programmers it´s very common to work with strings and therefore the LIKE-operator is common known. LIKE was introduced among some VBA-programmers and was to them "hot & big news".

When it comes to MS I really like their softwares BUT on the other I dislike very much their businessmethod and the way they give support.

The activate-procedure (for XP +) is a remarkable turn-around from MS.

During the 80's when Lotus 1-2-3 ruled Lotus had a hardware-protection on it to prevent illegal copies. At that time MS decided to distribute their softwares without hardware-protection only with a simple licensnumber. MS distributed a lot of trials at that time and was the leading company for breaking the hardware-protection de facto standard.

Now when MS have monopoly on operatingsystem on Intelx86 and office-suite these products have become protected by hardware.

What a coincedence!!

Hehe, a true and funny story is the following one:
An IT-manager at a swedish larger company (>1500 employees) called MS-support (charged according to their pricelist) and asked about an XL-problem. The answer he got was to visit my site...

Kind regards,
Dennis

I don't agree and think most of your list is of little relevance, focusing on the bullet #10. You may raise a good point about updating the drivers, this may resolve the issue as well. But, the appropriate update may not be available for some time... Good thinking. Incidentally, how do you know how much I know about computers Dennis? Just curious.

Regards,
Nate

Hi Nate

This is simply innaccurate and a poor analysis IMO, of point #10 (at least).

I leave it up to You and other big guys to make the deep analysis since it´s looks LIKE You have all the knowhow in this area.

I still rely on IBM PC-Support (who have given an excellent support for the last 15 years) since I don´t claim that I´m a professional PC-Supporter only a happy IBM- customer

Q1: Ok, so You´re a LAN-Administrator.
What does that have to do with the subject?

Kind regards,
Dennis

Hello again Dennis ,

I leave it up to You and other big guys to make the deep analysis since it´s looks LIKE You have all the knowhow in this area.

It wasn't my thread, seems like MarkHenri had the know-how actually. Moderate analysis proved some truisims in the case of this thread. I'm actually not looking to proclaim a great deal of knowledge here, but I am questioning your statement about Bill, myself & others... But, it seems LIKE You have changed Your mind.

I still rely on IBM PC-Support (who have given an excellent support for the last 15 years) since I don´t claim that I´m a professional PC-Supporter only a happy IBM- customer

I'm sure they're solid. I would suspect MS knows something about their products as well.

Q1: Ok, so You´re a LAN-Administrator.
What does that have to do with the subject?

A1: Well that depends, in certain NT/Win 2000 operating environment configurations, the majority of users do not have administrative rights necessary to modify their registry and; consequently, cannot upgrade/initialize new drivers. But, they are able to flip exisiting ones. Again, don't claim to have all of the answers, but, I did like MarkHenri's. It is fair enough if you didn't.
