Fuzzy Matching - new version plus explanation

It has been a while since I originally posted my Fuzzy matching UDF’s on the board, and several variants have appeared subsequently.

I thought it time to ‘put the record straight’ & post a definitive version which contains slightly more efficient code, and better matching algorithms, so here it is.

Firstly, I must state that the Fuzzy matching algorithms are very CPU hungry, and should be used sparingly. If for instance you require to lookup a match for a string which starts with, contains or ends with a specified value, this can be performed far more efficiently using the MATCH function:

My formula of the first one on C16 is =fuzzyvlookup(B16,F4:F11,0,,,2)
I believe it Wont work because I havent don't any VBA.

Hi,

So can you do the following steps:
1) follow the link to FUzzyVLookup in my signature
2) Open Excel w/book, [Alt-F11], then from the menu Insert / Module
3) Switch to the FuzzyVLookup link, highlight ALL the code in the code window (i.e. select thefirst line of the code, drag the slider down, and keeping [Shift] ptressed, click on the last character of the code. You should now have highlighted all the code in the window.
4) [Ctrl-C] to copy the code
5) Switch to the VBA module, and click on the Code window of your newly created module
6) [Ctrl-V] to paste in the code.
7) Switch to the Excel sheet, place this formula in C16 and drag down:

=fuzzyvlookup(A16,E:F,2,,,2)

I have basically opened the excel file that I wanted the VBE to act in,
click Microsoft Visual Basic,
Click on Insert-Module- [Module 1(Code)] - copied all the codes on your link - click on the Excel button on my Visual Basic window and plug in the formula,

Again, didn't work, I copied everything from "option explicit" up to "end of function" on a module that has my file name on it. My excel file name is "playaround" and it is pasted on playaround.xls- Module2 (Code) and I can see greens and blues on my code text.. Still give me #name

No, it's not case sensitive.
Are you able to select the fuzzyVLookup via the 'fx' button (to the left of the formula bar) under 'User Defined' category?

When i type in the formula fuzzyvlookup, the lookup value, table arrays are highlighted
but usually when i type normal vlookup it will come out a small dialogue text to guide you to the formulas. With fuzzyvlookup, I don't see any.

Two thing I have to note you though,
On my Microsoft Visual Basic where I enter my code, on my top right side, it says FuzzyHLookup, I tired to click on FuzzyVlookup, still nothing happened to my excel spreadsheet
On my Procedure view button, it didn't start from Option Explicit, but on the Full view button, it did..
