Frozen Panes not Alphabetizing

I am using excel 2007

I need to freeze the top of my document to maintain headings. When I freeze or split the cells, I loose the option to Alphabetize ONLY after I protect the sheet. The sheet works well until I protect it. How can I freeze the heading, protect the sheet, and still maintain the option to Alphabetize the column? Thanx for your help.

By "Alphabetize" do you mean to 'sort alphabetically'?

When you Protect the sheet, are you selecting the checkbox on the Protect Sheet dialogue box that allows you to sort the sheet even though it is protected?

You are correct, I am trying to SORT Alphabetically. Yes I do have the sort option checked in the protection options. When I attempt to sort alphabetically I receive a "Protected cell therefore a read only" message.
Thoughts?

Even though the sort option is checked in a protected sheet
* if the cell is "locked "-- "format cell option under protection tab"
then you can't sort it...
