I am trying to sum some cells but when I add 2 cells the function box becomes to big (these cells are results or formulas of there own) and covers other cells that I want to click. Is there a way to restrict the function box to a certain size ( 1 line or 2 ) I still want the function bar to exist because I would like to track my formula.

If you know anything that could help I would appreciate it.

Thanks
Andrew

Hi Tom. Have you ever even come across a WinAPI call that would alter the properties of the edit region in the formula bar? As I indicated earlier, I've never come across one.

Excel Facts

Can Excel fill bagel flavors?
You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK
Thanks Tom for the suggestion it works fine.
I would ultimately like to see if there is a way to limit the formula box and still be visible.

Thanks Guys for your help.

No I have not.

The formula bar displays the true underlying value of the cell, so what I would do is either what I suggested, or upon selection temporarily truncate the value to a pre-set length and restore it at deselection. The only reason I would do the latter would be to avoid the hiding and unhiding of the formula bar, as that can get annoying with my code. However, if any cells are precedents for formulas elswhere I would not do the latter under any conditions.

As for the formula bar property itself to automatically display only a portion (first 50 characters let's say) then that would be the best solution if it affected nothing else. Maybe someone knows such code or could develop it, I'll hunt around during my "spare time" today.

Before entering the autosum function click on the align text left (or right) button on the ribbon for the cell where you're going to insert the function, so that formula box will not cover the cells you want to choose.

In case anyone finds this thread with the same problem, writing a formula in a cell makes adjacent cells unselectable, there may be a simple solution.

Make the column wider and change the alignment of the cell. I

If you want to select table cells to the left of the cell with the formula, then format that cell to align left so the text overflows the cell to the right.

You can reformat the cells when you have a working formula.

Hi Andrew,

I found that if I select the field where I want to create the formula and then select and type in the formula bar the text does not cover the fields in the immediate area.
I hope this is helpful.
