In Excel, I want to format a number as "General", together with commas to separate multiples of 1000.
The current General format excludes the commas.
For example:
INPUT: 1245.32
SCREEN OUTPUT: 1,245.32

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
Why do you want to format as General?
If you want the commas, you need to format as Number.

Why do you want to use General? By definition, General formatting means no specific number format. Use Number or Custom formatting.

I think my query is unique. I actually want to combine General with Custom formatting, but it looks like it may not be possible.

1. The comma is a visual aid to show the order of magnitude. If I look at a number such as 4125859 it is not apparent to me whether it is approximately 4 million or 4 hundred thousand or 40 million. Whereas 4,125,859 immediately tells me that it is approximately 4 million.
2. The General format is there for smaller numbers with may decimal places.

I've tried Custom formats such as "###,###,###.#########" or variation to this. It works fine except for whole numbers which show up with a decimal place at the end, which I don't want. For example "1245" shows as "1,245." whereas I want "1,245".

@AlphaFrog, I looked into the above but the solution is too restrictive for my purposes.
I think I will have to live without the General format.

@footoo, I didn't want to have conditional formatting or 2 different formats (more than and less than a specified number),
