finding 1 value from Median

Thank you for taking time to read my question
Is there an approach through Excel formula to find the next value above and below the median?

I am building a system for clinical governance analysis of clinical events and trying to find the values above and below median for demonstration of trends\patterns to hospital Board. (Current range of values is for 3 years (36 values))

Any advice would be appreciated

Experimenting helps when given a lead
Thanks for the lead Cubist, I have experimented with the maxifs notion using Large and small - it works!
=LARGE(IF(C3:C19<D3,C3:C19),1) - 17
=SMALL(IF(C3:C19>D3,C3:C19),1) - 21

this allows ability to provide additional values around median by changing k to identify potential patterns for clinical reviews.
