Hi Nate,

one of the first things I usually do on a new sheet is add =cell("filename",a1) so I can find it later, just discipline, I guess. However, I often find myself deleting row 1 or column A a few times throughout the design which then gives an #N/A in this reference. Pain ? oh yes. Just a tip, but now whenever I use it, I use =cell("filename",aa9999).

Just thought I'd share

Excel Facts

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
Good point Chris, any cell reference on the sheet [without "sheetname"!] in question will "ground" any of the "filename" formulae in question. T'is why the a1 reference need not be an absolute value (i.e., $a$1)

Cheers, Nate

Another way (fyi):

= LEFT(MID(CELL("filename",A1),FIND("[",CELL("filename",A1))+1,FIND("]",CELL("filename",A1))-FIND("[",CELL("filename",A1))-1),LEN(MID(CELL("filename",A1),FIND("[",CELL("filename",A1))+1,FIND("]",CELL("filename",A1))-FIND("[",CELL("filename",A1))-1))-4)

Cheers, Nate
