Excel size grows even when I remove formulas

I initially had an excel with many columns, a macro, and about 30k rows. I deleted formulas from rows 2k onwards to 30k, and the excel instead of shrinking in size became larger. I also removed the fill color on that area, and the excel added another 1MB. I am very confused about why an excel would not shrink in size when I remove formulas/ other stuff. any ideas what I should do?
