excel drop down menus

is there a way to deactivate all the items within a drop down list, so that nothing can be clicked...only looked at? thank you
 
I guess I took that too literally. Data validation allows you to choose a list item without sheet protection and I answered as though sheet protection was to be avoided.
So you have a solution?
seems my drop down menus wont work without 'protect sheet', so i will relent to that last....i thought i had it figured out when i switched today to data validation 'input message', but i guess there is a character limit, and some of my lists are quite long...so some worked perfectly, but the longer ones wouldn't paste (...from Word....long or short, neither would paste from Excel). i will keep thinking. thanks for your assist
