Prior to office 365, Excel started relatively quickly.
With 365 version, it takes a long time to start and also close.
Tried with disabled hardware acceleration but it made no difference.

Why does this happen and how can it be made quicker.

This may not be your issue, but FWIW, make sure your default printer is easily readable by your PC. I had a problem where a slow-to-respond network printer was slowing down Excel loading by A LOT whenever I was on the road and using a VPN connection. I Solved my problem by changing my default printer setting to "Microsoft Print to PDF"

Thanks rlv01, my default printer is for PDF as well.
The issue is still there regardless if working in the office with a cable connection or remotely with VPN. The computer is a reasonable spec. Sometimes take longer than at other times but always slow to load, most of the time closing seems to freeze the program (Not Responding).
