Excel 2016 - documents opening in separate processes?

For the past decade plus, the way Excel worked for me anyway, every time you double clicked to open an Excel doc in windows explorer, if you already had another Excel doc open, it would load the new one you clicked on in the same process. Now there seems to be little rhyme or reason. Sometimes it opens in the same process, sometimes it opens a new process, etc.

This means the old method of - opening a document that has macros, then opening a script you want to run a macro in that for example references Workbooks(...) expecting the new opened one to be there, fail. You have to open it in the same process via Excel itself if you want that behavior.

Does anybody know why this was changed or know how to disable it creating new processes?

Thanks!
