Excel 2010 hangs/crashes on a daily basis!

Hi folks,

I am running:

Microsoft Excel 2010
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 32-Bit

---

I have just migrated to a new machine, with a fresh copy of windows and office, and the identical problem from the previous machine remains, so please help!

---

At random points several different spreadsheets hang, crash and freeze up Excel on a consistent daily basis.

I have checked that:

  • It's not an old sheet, still happens with brand new sheets
  • I've disabled protected view options
  • I've saved files in a different location (local/network)
  • I've altered filenames
  • I've disabled all Macros

This is really infuriating now because, as far as I can tell this is an out and out bug in Excel 2010.

It is frequently on clicking 'Save As' or just 'Save' in general, be we saving it as .xlsx, a template or .pdf.

So please help, here is the log from Event Viewer:

Are you using the same printer as the previous machine and did you copy across any personal workbooks/templates or addins from the previous machine? (or indeed your entire profile)

Hey thanks for the quick reply!

Yup same printers, on an office network, but for the time this problem has been going on we've added new printers, and updated the network (new switches, router, cabling etc.). There is one hp printer which has been there from the start though.

Yes some of the same files are still in use as before, as they are stored on a NAS and are company files, but the template is relatively new and the freezing/hanging was happening before it's existence.

Edit: only add-in active is the Google Desktop Search

Has your default printer changed? If you change it to say the MS XPS writer, does the same problem happen? Equally, if you run Excel in Safe Mode, does the problem occur?
Obviously it is not typical Excel 2010 behaviour or no-one would be using it! ;)

I don't think the default printer has changed, I'll try changing it to MS XPS and post back.

The same does indeed happen in Safe Mode.

I realise it's not typical E2010 behaviour, but there is quite a catalogue of freeze errors for it on Google, so I'm certainly not alone. I personally like E2003 more :)

Based on your error log, you don't appear to have the correct version number - mine is 14.0.4760.1000 rather than 14.0.4756.1000

Just thought - are you using 64bit Office? That might well explain the different version number.

Never mind - I just checked the MSKB and yours is the correct version number for the original Excel 2010 app. (mine is the version for Office/Outlook though it is being displayed in Excel oddly).
So I think we're back to the printer test to start with.
