Did anyone else think they were quite good on Excel....

Where I used to work, I was considered something of an Excel expert. But for the most part I've long ago given up tackling Excel-specific questions in the forums - simply because there are so many people around who can do so at least as well (and often far better) than I can. Instead, I concentrate on MS Word (especially in the field-coding arena) and its interactions with other Office products (mostly Excel). Which, I suppose, is why MS gave me Word MVP status.

Excel Facts

What is the fastest way to copy a formula?
If A2:A50000 contain data. Enter a formula in B2. Select B2. Double-click the Fill Handle and Excel will shoot the formula down to B50000.
I thought I was good ... then I came across the likes of RoryA, Richard & all the other MVPs !!!

In terms of the Lord of the Rings I'd regard the MVPs on a par with Gandalf - I am a mere halfing !!!.

However the people I work with (in a number of client organisations) regard me very highly.

thanks

Kaps

It's amazing how many people don't actually know that much on Excel, I still amaze my colleagues, parents and other half on it's capabilities...

Yet here I am, every day browsing the forums and asking questions. ;)

BUT has anyone had the misfortune of people thinking that because you know a bit of Excel that you can fix ANY computer problem?
I regularly get asked "what's wrong with my e-mail?" or "what's wrong with the (in-house) system?"

Which is normally met by an unamused look and a response of "ring IT"

Yes yes yes

I am known as our companies spreadsheet specialist...well I found Mr Excel and was made humble  by the MVP's and other members who are quick to answer the questions that I can't even fathom.

I am learning so very much from this site, I look in each and every day to see if there is something more I can learn.

I am most definitely EXCEL addicted :)

I've been working on my resume and even though I use Excel every day and know far more about it than anyone else I've ever met in person, if someone who knows 10% as much about excel as the MVPs on here know, having put that I'm good with Excel on my resume will look ridiculous.

What level of proficiency do you guys think you need to be at to say that you're good with excel?

Depends on what job you're going for. For general office work, if you know how to do lookups and pivots, you're brilliant. Equally, if you know your way here, you can say you are... ;)
OTOH, if you're going for a spreadsheet development job, you may need to be a bit more circumspect! (especially if your interviewer turns out to be Stephen Bullen...)

I would say it's rare to come across a role entirely dedicated to Excel/VBA role that would warrant the skills of an Microsoft Excel MVP.
Most development roles of that nature (IME) generally necessitate exposure in other areas (.NET, C etc... or specific business skills [read "city types"])
On that basis it should be fairly easy to gauge the audience you're dealing with in your application(s)

Those few who know a lot about Excel would probably admit that they know more than they actually need for their day to day work with Excel.
The "other stuff" has generally been picked up by virtue of helping others on boards such as this.

Most of us are convinced that Rory's day generally involves getting to work and pressing a button* to kick off all of his little gizmos before he settles down to a day on the boards
(unless out for a long lunch with Schollar of course)

*only because he has to do something

I actually have a motion sensor that starts the whole thing. I'm too lazy to do anything beyond walking past my desk on the way to the pub.

I knew I was never good with excel, but I do ok with VBA.

One thing you learn when you work with engineers and buyers is how to communicate with spreadsheets!
