Hi all,

I have just completed this code which as the thread title says, it adds a balloon tip to the worksheets of your choice... Having a tooltip displaying info about the sheet when placing the mouse pointer over the tab can be useful and fun.

The code is based on the sheet CodeName so that it keeps identifying the correct sheet even if the user changes the sheet name.

I have written the code in excel 2016-64bit but hopefully, it should work fine in other excel versions.

Although the code makes API calls, it should be stable and (hopefully) won't crash excel even if an unhandled error occurs while running.

I have discovered a stealth problem that causes the code to error out. The error happens when the system enters sleep mode or the display is turned off while the application is running. The reason for this is the CommandBars OnUpdate event that runs behind the scenes. For some reason, it throws an error which can & will confuse the user.

Fortunately, there is this SetThreadExecutionState kernel32 api function that comes to the rescue.

Below is a new Workbook Example that includes all the updates dicussed so far.

Excel Facts

Workdays for a market open Mon, Wed, Friday?
Yes! Use "0101011" for the weekend argument in NETWORKDAYS.INTL or WORKDAY.INTL. The 7 digits start on Monday. 1 means it is a weekend.
Thank you for the update. I've explored ways of using the OnUpdate event you introduced us to in some of your workbooks as a way of avoiding SetTmer/KillTimer (which perpetually terrify me!) - is this error/fix something we need to be conscious of going forward or do you think its limited to this particular scenario?

You could do that by storing the value of each udt tooltip field in their respective cell in the hidden "tab info" sheet.
Private Type ToolTip SheetCodeName As String * 256 Title As String * 256 Text As String * 256 Icon As ICON_TYPE SystemLook As Boolean BackColor As XlRgbColor TextColor As XlRgbColor Beep As Boolean TimeOut As Single End Type

For example :
A1= SheetCodeName
A2= Title
A3= Text
etc

And then adjust the calling code as follows :
Dim oTip1 As ToolTip With oTip1 .SheetCodeName = Sheets(Tab info").Range("A1").Value & vbNullChar .Title = Sheets(Tab info").Range("A2").Value & vbNullChar .Text = Sheets(Tab info").Range("A3").Value & vbNullChar ... etc End With
Thanks very much . . . I'll give it a try

No. It is not limited to this specific scenario. It happens everytime the OnUpdate event is used as an alternative to a timer or to a Do-Events loop. Still, I like using the OnUpdate event whenever possible because it is more stable and less invasive than timers and loops.

Thank you, Jaafar. I agree re: OnUpdate - it's so useful.

Hi Jaafar,
I have been admiring you for a long time (a couple of years) for what you are doing with the Win API in VBA. Thank you for everything you have shown.

There is a small localization problem in the cmb_OnUpdate procedure.
Specifically, it is about the line:
Code:
If oIAParent.accName(CHILDID_SELF) = "Sheet Tabs" Then
oIAParent.accName(CHILDID_SELF) changes its value depending on the language version used (in Polish "Karty arkuszy").
Do you see an opportunity to find out what the name of the "Sheet Tabs" object actually is before this line is used. You can, of course, prepare a function with predefined names depending on the language, but this seems not very elegant.

Hi Artik,

Thanks, I am flattered by your comments and by your approbation. As for the point you raise reagrding "predefined names", I think, it would be difficult to account for all the various languages.

In this specific scenario, we can use AccRole to retrieve the "Sheet Tabs" element as an alternative to using the language-specific AccName Method.

The Role value is not language-dependent. I should have used it instead of using AccName. So thank you for bringing this up to my attention.

The "Sheet Tabs" accessible element has a system role that evaluates to (&H3C&). Therefore, we can replace the line : If oIAParent.accName(CHILDID_SELF) = "Sheet Tabs" Then with the following AccRole alternative and it should now work regardless of the user interface language.

VBA Code:
Const ROLE_SYSTEM_PAGETABLIST = &H3C&
If oIAParent.accRole(CHILDID_SELF) = ROLE_SYSTEM_PAGETABLIST Then

Hi Jaafar,
Amazing job with the code...
The code works perfectly for me with excel 2019.
I wanted to ask if you could help me out running this code on excel 2021 version, as it seems not to work on that version.
It doesn't error or runs a security/compatibility message or something like that, it's just being ignored by the software no matter what I do.
Do you think you can figure out the problem?
Thanks

Hi @alti5880 - can you just please confirm which version of the code you're using? You'll see that Jaafar recently updated it in Post #21 above.
