Considering upgrading this forums or platform into the 21 century ?

i hope you got the picture Joe. i believe that adding collaboration tools will exploit a positive potential for the site, it will definitely increase the number of viewers and subscribers even more.
And who do you think is going to fund/manage something like that?
In case you missed it, this is a free site, and all the people here are volunteers. None of us get paid for this.

I think you may be overestimating the complexity of 99% of the questions on the site. For the most part, they're specific problems, not projects.

I fail to see the comparison between a question and answer forum and a hosted git solution. One is for asking questions and receiving answers, the other is for software / project collaboration - they're not the same thing. As a direct comparison, Stack Overflow and GitHub co-exist they aren't the same thing.

In addition Subscribers don't pay the bills - most ads are viewed by people who don't have an account.

Relax guys i am just exchanging ideas ! I am not forcing anything ! i do not know why Roy takes it in a hostile way, i just thought about having an exchange about how can we improve the site BY adding more features that is all.

+ if we have solid ideas with solid backing we can always open a funding petition on indie sites like KickStarter for instance to bring money for the site projects.

even monetizing volunteers seems like another good idea Joe, where people who feel benefited from the site can donate through paypal and other means to the MVPs and pros that are helping them in their cases.

Additionally (not that it would happen anyway) there are serious technical challenges to making your suggestion work. The majority of people visiting the site are at work and that means old browsers enforced by IT policies - making something like you suggest work in IE8 would be horrendous at best.

Why not consider setting up your own forum? There are plenty of solutions out there that address the issues you are talking about and attempt to re-invent forum software. Off the top of my head, you could look at NodeBB, the newcomer Flarum (though still in beta), or Jeff Attwood's (of SO fame) Discourse

any of those that have a living not dead Excel section or community that you can recommend ?

thanks

1. My name is not Roy. ;)
2. I'm not being hostile - you just don't seem to be paying any attention to what people are telling you, since you just keep repeating yourself.
3. As I mentioned, you only registered yesterday and now you're telling us that our site is outdated and inefficient, and should be completely rebuilt, even though it's extremely successful as it is. I would think you might understand how that could come across badly?

Perhaps you'd like ExcelForum - they like hacking their site about in the live environment.

anyways i guess this thread has exhausted its purpose, we got a clear picture about the future prospect of the development of this site.

so for the mods you can close this thread or keep it open for potential future ideas discussion that may come from other members.

Exactly. Would you start a new job, and then on the second day, march into your boss's office and tell him everything that is wrong with the company?

Not entirely truthful, you have inserted a few passive aggressive digs in there.
my take is that this view is old fashioned.

however the forums platform is outdated and needs more than a face lift
(last one from your other thread)

That is exactly the kind of thing we try to avoid. I am not asking for any compensation. And we don’t want the users to feel obligated to offer compensation. It is a very intentional decision to keep this board free for users. That is of utmost importance to the site's owner.

The truth of the matter is, every so often someone makes a post on all the things that we should do or change, without realizing that most of it has already been decided and discussed many, many times over (search the “About This Board” forum, you will finds tons of threads like this). So, sometimes it gets a little tiresome having to go through it over and over again. Its not like the Admins are sitting around twiddling their thumbs asking “why didn’t I think of that”? Most of the way this board is set up is very intentional, and has been discussed ad nauseam.
