Conditional Summing

In column A, I have dates. They are formatted to appear as 10-01-2011. In column C, I have numerical values. I would like to sum all values in column C that are in the month of October from column A. I plan to use that formula to place in other cells for the other months.

=SUMPRODUCT(--(LEFT(A8:A17,LEN(A7))=A7&""),C8:C17)
