Conditional formatting Questions

I have a sheet with 5 conditional formatting rules all of the rules cover the same range. when I insert or delete into the formatted range, the conditional formatting entries appear to grow, now this appears to have no effect to the performance of the sheet.
Is there away to prevent this other resetting the conditional formatting rule and ranges.
