Conditional Formatting Icon Sets

I'm trying to use conditional formatting to insert a check mark if a certain cell has been "checked". In other words, if I enter the text "x" into the cell, I would like excel to insert a nice looking icon instead of the boring "x". Unfortunately, I can only seem to be able to get it to work based on values in the cell (e.g., if greater than x, green check, if less than x but greater than y, yellow check, if less than y, red check, etc.).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How to create a cell-sized chart?
Tiny charts, called Sparklines, were added to Excel 2010. Look for Sparklines on the Insert tab.
hi - welcome to the board.

Take a look at an alternative font & see what options you have for x - e.g. wingdings 3 will display X as <TABLE style="WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=64 border=0 x:str><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 48pt" width=64><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17><TD class=xl24 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #ece9d8; BORDER-TOP: #ece9d8; BORDER-LEFT: #ece9d8; WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-BOTTOM: #ece9d8; HEIGHT: 12.75pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" width=64 height=17>X</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

...but you might want to just use data validation to limit the entry options & make them enter something you like.

I agree with Paddy, try and use data validation to limit the entry options and I'd probably suggest using Windings 2, once you do this to get a tick use Shift+P and to get a cross Shift+O etc

Hope this helps.
