Conditional Formating Equations

I usd to think I was an Excel power user but I am stumped. If I put an equation into conditional formating it does not seem to take effect. As a test, I put the same equation in the cell contents, and it evaluates to TRUE. When I copy that same equation into the conditional formating equation, and select a cell shade format (eg Red), it doesn't do it. Any ideas? I am willing to send the example to anyone who wants to look at it.

Thanks, The reference looks pretty lengthy, and I knew I was not the first person with this idea. I will look at it. BUT, I still have a "process" question. How can a formula evaluate to TRUE, but still not have any effect when that identical formula is used as a conditonal format equation, i.e. fail to invoke the prescribed format ?

I have discovered the answer to my own question. You apparently cannot use named variables in the condiotional formating equation. Nice of MicroSoft to let you know. Note that no error message is generated when you try to do this.
