Column width in Header / Footer

I have Excel 2010, and the header and footer are by default each divided into 3 boxes, each of equal width. Is there any way of changing the width of the boxes? I would like to have the centre box wider than the other two.

Doesn't the width of the columns adjust to fit the text?

No, it doesn't. The text just overflows to the adjacent column(s).

Isn't that the same as the columns widening? Can you post an example of what you want?

I think I may have defined the problem too loosely - and this despite having used spreadsheets for the first time 32 years ago!

ScreenShot 1 shows the left header box overflowing into the centre box, and the centre box overflowing to the left. The text gets mixed up, of course. ScreenShot 2 shows how I can compensate by putting line breaks in the right places.

But surely I shouldn't have to do this. In the body of the worksheet, I can adjust column widths and get text to wrap automatically, but I can't do either of those things in the header / footer. Is there another workaround, or is it just a limitation of the software?

You can wrap the text by pressing Enter where you want a new line to start.
