This may be a OneDrive issue, it's definitely across all my Office applications, but I first noticed it in Excel. And everyone here is quick with correct answers (whereas the MSFT folks are slow with unhelpful answers). So I'm dropping this here to see if anyone else has any similar issues and hopefully found a fix.

When I click the down arrow next to a filename in the Quick Access Toolbar (or is it the Title Bar? I have no idea what to call it and my Googling won't find it), if it's an AutoSave (One Drive) file, I should be able to:
  • Change the file name
  • Change the file location
  • See the version history

I love this feature! I can move files or rename them without "Save As," find the original, delete it, delete it from recent...

Trouble is, now, when I click "Location", instead of bringing up the directory hierarchy, it's blank:

Obviously I used to be able to move my files to other locations. Not anymore!

The file-naming option still works fine.

I noticed this first yesterday morning with Excel files, then tested it in PowerPoint and had similar issues. Word was OK until later in the day. Now all three are behaving similiarly.

This is happening on both my home and office networks (same PC).

I have signed out of Office and back in. I have disconnected from OneDrive and reconnected. I have used both the Quick and the full/online repair tools.

My files are syncing:

And I have not changed any of my "Saving" information in Options:

Does it help to check that "Show additional places..." box?
Otherwise, perhaps a silly group policy at play? Have you also rebooted your machine?

"Of course I've tried soapy water!" Yes, I always presume "Reboot" is unspoken... Even did a full shutdown...

There's no "group" (sole user) so if there's a policy in play how/why could that have changed?

Also the "Show Additional Places" is for when you're using File=>Save or =>Save As, allows you to save to Sharepoint, etc., is my understanding. I've never had it checked (so no change); it doesn't make a difference, regardless.

Shoot, not that I wish trouble on anyone but I was hoping others had noticed as well!

Have you checked Settings, Accounts? Perhaps there is one (more than one?) with issues there?

I just tried with one of my private OneDrive files and got this:

Looks familiar? I couldn't care less that it remains empty for me, I never use this. But it is intriguing. I'll ask around.

Yes that's exactly the problem. It should bring up a file heirarchy window (different from the "Save" window, for some reason)

I just use F12 if I want to do a save-as. If I get any response on my ask-around I'll let you know.

F12 creates a duplicate file. This renames the existing, and, when working, allows you to move it (and keep it mapped in "Recents", with links, etc.) It's pretty slick.

FWIW:
I had been on the early-release Insider for Office channel until a few weeks ago. I doubt there's a connection, but I am still on the Windows Preview Insider build... It updated on Sunday, and on Monday I noticed that Word was behaving correctly, but Excel and PowerPoint were still not allowing me to change locations.

Can't say there's a connection to the update, just. Wasn't working last week. Updated Sunday. Partially working now.

You mean a Dropbox version of the file? Like, just a Save As to your Dropbox?

Be curious what it's like after your next reboot. If it reverts to stupid or that was a "fix"...

(I stopped using Dropbox over five years ago. I don't think that caused the pandemic, but...)
