I'm trying to make a column have negative numbers like a checkbook ledger.I'm

If I entered $12.00 into a cell in that column I would like it to actually be ($12.00).

I know this is simple and I have did it several times before but for some reason I can't get it.

I'm using excel 98 version.

Thanks,

It works great,

Thank you very much, I was looking for the answer for hours. You know how you get on something and don't want to stop until you figure it out.

Have a nice day

Yup, I understand and don't give up.

Have a nice day.

Excel Facts

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
This code works fine.

but - I have a problem with it.

I am moving data in an excell file to and from my pc to my pocket pc (tmobile mda).

On the pocket pc the program is pocket excel and it doesn't accept a few functions. So the code doesn't work, is there another way to accomplish the same thing?

Thanks,

.........alternatively you could just custom format the column in question......

1.Right click a cell at the top of the column
2.Select "Format cells"
3.Select the "Number" tab if not already selected
4.From the bottom of the list select "Custom"
5.Select any format, then in the "Type" window, overwrite the format you've just selected with :
($#,##0.00)
You can copy the above then paste it in by using Ctrl + V
6. Click OK.

Now, any number you type in will be formatted as you've requested. You don't have to enter the $ sign, as it's already included in the format.

Once you've done this, and before putting any data in the cell, use the drag handle to copy the format all the way down the column as far as you wish, or use copy, then paste special / formats for the rest of the column.

That works, it makes the number look like this ($10.00).

But

When that number is used in an equation it comes out a positive number.

For example:
Sum $10.00+$5.00 = $15.00

Alternatively, add one column, say column F and enter
=-ABS(E1)
and calculate with this column.
