Can't copy Formulas from one workbook to another

There must be a simple solution here....
I have two workbooks (separate excel files, not worksheets) but I can't copy the formula from one to another - after pasting, the result is just the values (from the copied book), no formulas.

I'm using the Ctrl + C and Ctrl + P. Even if I try dragging and dropping - I get just the values.

I must be missing something very simple.
Thanks

I have always copied the formula text from the formula bar rather than trying to copy the cell when doing this process.

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
Do you have the two workbooks open in separate instances of Excel? To paste formulas, you need both workbooks open in the same instance.
Thank you! I saved and closed the "pasted" file, Went to the "From" file, File > Open > selected my "pasted" file. Once opened, I then copied and pasted the columns and VOILA!!! The formulas showed up and not the "values pasted" result! Thank you Richard!

I have the same issue as the OP. I am having trouble pasting from another sheet within the same workbook. It copies with different values and formulas and gives this error in the first cell "Invalid Reference Error". I am not completely sure if i used a macro to create the original row i am trying to copy. How do I close on instance to paste it correctly?

If you are trying to copy between worksheets within the sme workbook, then you do NOT have the same issue as the original question - it is totally different.
As such, you should post your question to a new thread of its own. It will also then appear in the "Unanswered threads" listing that many people use to look for new questions to answer.
I also recommend providing more detail in your description, i.e.
- what method of copy/paste you are using
- what range you are copying from
- what range you are copying to
