I haven't seen this exact question answered so would like some help here. It is related to a bank account running total on an Excel Spreadsheet.

I have 3 columns: Credit, Debit and Total

I have tried this formula:

=IF(OR(ISBLANK(B3),ISBLANK(C3)),"0.00",D2+B3-C3) for the 'Total' cell (column D in my sheet, column A being the date). But this does not work and brings up 0.00 in the 'Total' cell.

Can anyone see where the formula is wrong?

Excel Facts

Workdays for a market open Mon, Wed, Friday?
Yes! Use "0101011" for the weekend argument in NETWORKDAYS.INTL or WORKDAY.INTL. The 7 digits start on Monday. 1 means it is a weekend.
If you enter it as "0.00", it will get added as Text, and won't work in any calculations. You would want to use 0 (without quotes), and use cell formatting to handle the decimal places.

I am also a little unclear on the structure of your formula.
If the cells truly are blank, you shouldn't need to check for blanks. Excel will handle them as zeroes.
So, maybe all you need it:
Code:
=D2+B3-C3

Hi Joe4,

Thanks for your answer. That makes sense. In the end I did something similar to what you suggested and used this formula instead:

Code:
=IF(B4+C4=0,0,D3+B4-C4)

OK, great. I assume that you are doing it that way for the first line, and every line below has an amount in either columns B or C.
